Position Title

Transtar, LLC – Legal Counsel

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Since the late 1800’s, the Transtar companies consist of a group of rail carriers have been an important component in this country’s industrial development. Moving billions of tons of raw materials to manufacturing sites. Transporting finished products to market. Storing and handling bulk commodities. Providing rail transport services to hundreds of satisfied customers throughout the nation’s industrial heartland.

Transtar, LLC is seeking a Counsel to join its rapidly growing team of professionals supporting operators of short-line railroads, contract switching companies, and railcar maintenance and cleaning companies in the Mid-Atlantic, Eastern, and Southern United States.  The successful candidate will be well versed in the legal and business issues facing a multi-jurisdictional commercial enterprise.

Job Responsibilities:

The primary focus of the position will be commercial contracts with customers, vendors, and third parties seeking to enter Transtar’s property.  Additional responsibilities include:

  • Real estate.
  • Claims management, including litigation, arbitration, and mediation.
  • Risk management, including placing, monitoring, and administering Transtar’s insurance program, as well as third parties’ compliance with Transtar’s insurance requirements.
  • Corporate secretary / entity management functions
  • Federal and state regulatory compliance, as well as compliance with internal policies and procedures.


Among others, the postiion may be called upon to advise management on matters governed by the Federal Railroad Administration, Surface Transportation Board, federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Environmental Protection Agency and state equivalents, and Sarbanes Oxley Act.


The minimum requirements needed to qualify for the Counsel role are:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited school of law.
  • 3 years legal experience in a law firm or as corporate in-house legal counsel.
  • Active Pennsylvania Bar License and a member in good standing.

Competencies- – The successful candidate should be willing to become a true generalist in all areas of law affecting a commercial enterprise.  The candidate will be regularly required to apply creativity, critical thinking, sound judgment, business acumen, and a healthy degree of skepticism to identify, analyze, advise internal clients regarding, and pragmatically solve complex legal issues in a manner that furthers Transtar’s growth and expansion goals while managing and mitigating risks.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are a must, and impeccable drafting skills are imperative.

Reporting:  Senior Vice President, Chief Legal & Commercial Officer, and Corporate Secretary

Working Conditions:  General office environment, with occasional visits to operating facilities.  Limited travel (<10%).  Occasional evening and weekend work, usually limited to emergency situations.
