Union Railroad Company – Diesel Locomotive Mechanic

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

The Diesel Locomotive Mechanic is a Maintenance of Equipment – Locomotive Department position of Transtar’s Union Railroad Company. The Diesel Locomotive Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, repair, and maintenance of diesel locomotives and mechanical road/shop equipment in field and shop environments.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Receives instructions regarding work to be done.
  • Determines materials and required tools for the job.
  • Inspection, maintenance, repairs and troubleshooting of diesel locomotives, and mechanical shop equipment.
  • Communicates written and/or verbal findings of inspections to Supervisor.
  • Performs disassembly, repair, replacement, rebuild, re-assembly, installation, adjustment, alignment, and lubrication activities on mechanical equipment.
  • Works independently designing and fabricating various brackets, structural supports, etc. as needed.

 

Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years work experience in the mechanical maintenance field with an emphasis in diesel powered engines, troubleshooting, repairs, overhauls and fuel/lubricating systems is required.
  • 4 years of work experience with welding/burning and metal fabrication is preferred.
  • The ability to use precision measuring tools is preferred.
  • Locomotive experience – running repair, truck overhaul, EMD engine experience or formal railroad locomotive maintenance training is preferred.
  • Technical training related to machinist/mechanic work, alignment of rotating equipment, compressed air brake maintenance, and heavy equipment maintenance is preferred.
  • Locomotive electrical training is a plus.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call is required.
  • A minimum of one year outdoor and industrial work experience is required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions is required.
  • Performing manual labor and lifting in excess of 50 pounds is required.
