Job Description

The Locomotive Electrician is a Maintenance of Equipment – Locomotive Department position of Transtar’s Union Railroad Company. The Locomotive Electrician is responsible for the inspection and repair of electrical wiring components on locomotives, machinery, buildings, miscellaneous equipment, and appliances in field and shop environments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Receives instructions regarding work to be done.
  • Determines materials and required tools for the job.
  • Inspection, maintenance, repairs and troubleshooting of diesel locomotives, and mechanical shop equipment.
  • Communicates written and/or verbal findings of inspections to Supervisor.
  • Performs inspection utilizing meters, analyzed trouble areas and makes repairs as required.
  • Performs necessary electrical tests, removes, disassembles, replaces, repairs, modifies, rebuilds, assembles, adjusts, and maintains batteries and all electrical equipment or components on locomotives, road maintenance equipment, lighting circuits, crane circuits, air compressors, building and shop facilities, and equipment.

Job Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Trade school or formal electrical maintenance training required
  • Locomotive diesel electrical training preferred.
  • Print reading experience preferred.
  • Troubleshooting experience preferred.
  • Computer skills preferred.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call is required.
  • One year of outdoor and industrial work experience is preferred.
  • Ability to climb is required.
  • Working at heights is required.
  • Performing manual labor and lifting in excess of 50 pounds is required.
