Union Railroad Company – Signal Helper

Location: Duquesne, PA

Since the late 1800’s, the Transtar companies consist of a group of rail carriers have been an important component in this country’s industrial development. Moving billions of tons of raw materials to manufacturing sites. Transporting finished products to market. Storing and handling bulk commodities. Providing rail transport services to hundreds of satisfied customers throughout the nation’s industrial heartland.

The Signal Helper position is a Maintenance of Way position of Transtar’s Union Railroad Company responsible for assisting in the installation, mechanical maintenance and testing of railroad signal and crossing warning systems, and associated electrical/electronic control systems.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lock tracks out and operates rail switches as instructed.
  • Dig ditches, pull cable, install conduit, and bond rail.
  • Install, maintain and repair signal equipment.
  • Assist in testing and inspections.
  • Gather tools necessary to perform maintenance/repair tasks.
  • Operate manual, pneumatic, and electric driven tools necessary to perform signal maintenance and repair work.
  • Drive/remove spikes, drill holes in rail/ties, remove/set/bolt plates on ties.
  • Maintains cleanliness of Signal and Communications facility.
  • Receive/interpret work orders, blueprint schematics of work to be done.
  • Load and unload materials in trucks.
  • Sort and stack material on job site or material storage area.
  • Remove snow and ice from power operated switches.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Ability to walk extended distances over uneven terrain is required.
  • Ability to lift and carry more than 50 pounds is required.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays is required.
  • Ability to operate manual, pneumatic and electric driven tools necessary to perform signal maintenance and repair work is required.
  • Electronic Vocational or trade school is preferred.
  • One year outdoor and industrial work experience required.
  • Railroad experience preferred.
